Draw on the Big Dome:

The ceiling of the state-of-the-art Bishop Planetarium is your canvas

October 13, 2009

The BIG DRAW-Ruskin and the South Florida Museum will host a free art workshop on Saturday, October 24 from 3:30-6:30pm at Bishop Planetarium in the South Florida Museum (201 10th St. Bradenton Florida 34205). The event is free and open to the public and is one in a series of month long events in October that celebrate drawing, invention and imagination . To reserve a space, participants may email info@bigdrawruskin, subject Planetarium Workshop, or call the Ruskin Branch Library (Hillsborough Cty) (813) 273-3652)

Taught by BIGDRAW visiting artists and Ringling College of Art & Design faculty Claudia Cumbie-Jones & Lance Ford Jones, "Extreme Perspectives: Drawing for the Big Dome" will explore perspective beyond the traditional one, two, and three-point techniques, and will survey “distorted” drawings (anamorphic projection, distorted grid, fisheye, etc) and focus on fisheye distortion for full Dome projection. There will be time for workshop participants to create images that will be projected onto the planetarium dome. Drawing materials are provided.

The Painting has Begun!

THe drawing and painting has begun; a very imaginative process as decisions about color and image and pattern are being made as the work develops; the very opposite of having a miniature plan in place and simply copying it to the wall. This process treats the building as a blank canvas, and builds the mural in much the same fashion as an easel painting would be developed. Stay tuned; the growth of the mural will be fascinating!

Mural Workshops

Collage

Blue Tree by Luis

Josette in studio

Collage

The workshops have begun, with the groups plunging into first collage and then watercolors from the landscape. Josette has jump started the groups with inventive and exploratory ideas, proceeding with a very experiential approach to composing with shapes and pulling shapes from observation. Everyone seems immersed in the processes and very enthused!

The mixing of kids, teens and adults in the workshops is working very well!

Community Mural Begun!!

The 2009 Mural project, part of the Big Draw here, has begun! Josette Urso met with over 50 (!!) people from the community on saturday to discuss her work and the project. The first workshops were today, ending with the walls of the studio filled with collages! The groups, from kids to teens to adults, seem brimming with enthusiasm! I left knowing I had seen a master teacher in action.

The groups, of diverse experience, began with simple shapes pulled from small objects, cut into cardboard and foam and whatever, and pinned up all over the room. She simply jumped them way beyond the usual struggles with drawing and insecurities, and had the group immersed in composing with shape and color. AND….hugely enthusiastic!!

Josette will be holding numerous intense workshops over the next two weeks; the whole schedule and a description of the project is at: http://www.southshoreartscouncil.org/mural2009.html Setting up the whole Big Draw is so labor intensive… easels, materials, keys, cleaning, getting the power on……borrowing tables and chairs…and then getting them moved in.

We are in the process of setting up the Big Draw Studio, at 613 N. US Highway 41 North, this week. So the mural group will be able to spread out and have lots of wall space!! It's an old Dollar General store, essentially 7,000 square feet of open and well lit space!! With AC!!

Stay tuned....
